Relay for Life 2009

We once again walked around the Carmel High School track for Relay for Life. Last year I alone took part in this and thought that this year the kids were old enough now to participate. The picture above is of our church group (The Frogs). Next year I will try to get shirts for Kayla and Jordan. :)

This Relay is put on by the American Cancer Society and is 24hrs long usually Saturday into Sunday morning. A bunch of people stay the night.....we chose this year to stay for the luminary service which happened to be late enough for Kayla and Jordan (they both could not sit still). I made a luminary in remembrance of my mother.

They light up the bags along the track and announce the names of those in honor and remembrance. When you hear your loved ones name you start walking on the track. It is very powerful and uplifting.

Before getting on the track to walk we saw this guy (from Silly Safaris). He had a bunch of animals (rabbit, turtle, alligator, cockroach (ewwww) and more that I can't remember). He actually got bit by the alligator and was bleeding a lot. Luckily someone had a first aid kit that came in handy.

There was an Elvis impersonator that was singing as we arrived and continued while we started walking. I am partial to my Dad so of course I thought that my Dad sounds more like Elvis than this guy.

During the evening different groups would have games or sell items to raise money for the cause. I thought that the kids would enjoy having their face painted. Jordan would have none of it, so Kayla got to pick 2 things. She got a frog on her arm and a heart on her cheek.

I believe that the kids had a lot of fun. Here is Kayla eating some pizza and dancing to some music that was being played by a local band on the other side of the track. At the end of the video Jordan also announces something to the entire group.

Tanya...that's great that your area has something like this to honor loved ones who passed away from cancer. I lost my g'ma June (my mom's mom) to pancreatic cancer 7 years ago. It's great you get your kids so involved in things like this too! Love it where Kayla is dancing and eating pizza! Jordan's funny too! Hee hee! Love this post! Have a great day! :)
